Documents compiled by Anna Elizabeth Jackson (nee McCormick) re. the McCormick, Gardner, Clark, Wilkinson, Gilchrist, and other related families of Puslinch Township. Jackson became involved with the Puslinch Historical Society in 1987. In an unsigned letter (Series 1, item 1), she has offered an introduction to this collection of family materials. It begins, "...let me introduce you to some of my ancestors. William McCormick 1806-1900, my great grandfather, emigrated in 1841 whith his wife and two small children...". Her notes which accompany some of the letters and other materials have been indicated below. [for Series 6, see other record for A2007.147] Series 1: McCormick family genealogical materials, ca. 1950-1992. item 1: Unsigned letter [written by Anna Jackson] describing the lives and emigration to Puslinch Township from Scotland of the McCormick family and their relatives. Letter draws from the other documents listed here, and offers the memories of life on a Puslinch Township farm, as told to her by her father, William A. McCormick. 8 pages, typed; dated Puslinch Historical Society May 11, 1992. item 2: Typed document entitled "MacCormick, William (deceased)", which appears to be a transcription from an obituary or history book, re. William McCormick of Puslinch Township, who died in 1900. Series 2: Land Records, Puslinch Township, 1852-1941. file 1: Concession 1, the southwest corner of Lot 20, Puslinch Township, consisisting of 2 acres, 3 roods and 37 perches, 1864-1910. item 1: Indenture; Archibald Thomson, yeoman of Puslinch Township, and his wife Janet Thomson, sold the lot to Thomas Fordyce, a labourer of Puslinch Township, 20 February 1864. Signed by James Pollock, Phillip Grant, Archibald Thomson, Janet Thomson, and Thomas Fordyce. Note: at time of accession, document is extremely fragile and after years of being opened and closed, has fallen away at the creases into several small pieces. Original document is filed in envelope along with photocopies of the pieces put together. item 2: Indenture; Thomas Fordyce, labourer of Listowell, Perth County, and his wife Annie Fordyce sold the lot to Malcolm McCormick, farmer of Puslinch Township, 04 March 1881. item 3: Deed of Land; Malcolm McCormick, farmer of Puslinch Township, sold the lot to his wife Helen McCormick for $1, 10 July 1884. item 4: Letters of Administration of the Property of Helen McCormick, deceased widow of the Township of Puslinch, 16 December 1908. item 5: Indenture [copy] made in pursuance of the act respecting short forms of conveyances and of the Devolution of Estates Act, between Hugh McIntyre (administrator of the estate of Helen McCormick), farmer of Puslinch Township, and others, 15 June 1910. Helen McCormick died intestate 7 Oct. 1908. People listed include Hugh McIntyre, Andrew McIntyre, Robert McIntyre, Jessie Wannop, Thomas Wannop, James McIntyre, Sarah Findlay, Robert Findlay, Annie McIntyre, William Carruthers, Elizabeth McIntyre, and William McCormack. 6 pages, including handwritten notes. file 2: Gore of Puslinch Township, north half of Lot 2, and the northwest quarter of Lot 3, 1865. item 1: Last Will and Testament of John Clark, written 01 May 1865. In his Will, he leaves the property to his son James Clark, providing some conditions are followed. Others mentioned in the will include Samuel Clark, William Clark, Mary Clark, John Clark, Jane Maitland, Flora Price, James Shaw and Thomas Eskdale. 1 page. Was attached to note written by compiler, "copy of last weill & testament of John Clark my mother's great grandfather in 1865". file 3: Gore of Puslinch Township, the southerly part of the north half of Lot 19, 66 acres, 1852-1941. item 1: Deed; Jane Lamprey, "widow lady" of the Town of Guelph sold the lot to William McCormick, yeoman of Puslinch Township, 05 October 1852. The Gore is descibed as being between the Townships of Beverly and Puslinch. Signed by Jane Lamprey and William McCormick. 1 page, double sided. item 2: "Extract from a letter of the Me[??] Pemrock[?] of date 1st May 1866", 1866. Re. this lot. Handwritten on blue paper; 1 page. item 3: Last Will and Testament of William McCormick, yeoman of Puslinch Township, died 05 February 1900. He left his estate to his sons Angus and Donald, his wife Elizabeth McCormick, and his daughter Mary McNaughton. Executors were his wife Elizabeth and his son Angus. Witnessed by stenographer Maggie McPhee of Guelph. Includes invoice of expenses from the firm of McMillan and Dunbar. 4 pages. item 4: Indenture; sale of property by Annie McCormick (widow) and Bessie McCormick (spinster), both of Puslinch Township, to William A. McCormick, farmer of Puslinch Township, 23 June 1941. 4 pages. Series 3: Family correspondence and documents, 1818-1980. file 1: Clark family correspondence and documents, 1857-ca.1980. item 1: Letter from Peter Clark to his father John Clark of Puslinch Township, dated 10 Somerville Place, Glasgow [Scotland], 04 July 1863. Re. not having heard from the addressee in over two years, the health of friends and relatives, the benefits of trusting in God, and Matthew Fleming of Campbeltown planning to emigrate to New Zealand where his brother had made a fortune. Attached note in the hand of the compiler reads, "Letter 4th July 1863 to John Clark, his father, in Puslinch from Peter in Glasgow". item 2: Letter from Alex Fleming to James Clark of Manitoba Street, Guelph, Canada, dated 168 West George Street, Glasgow [Scotland], 25 April 1893. Re. misdirected letter, Mrs. Peter Clark and family, good weather, the grown children of Mrs. Bryce (Flora Clark), not visiting Chicago, and the writer's housekeeper (Mrs. Heatherington, a cousin to people in Galt, Ontario). Includes envelope. item 3: Notes [likely written by Anna Jackson] re. the Clark family, ca. 1980. Includes information about Clark family marriages that took place between 1805 and 1828. item 4: Marriage certificate of James Clark, yeoman of Puslinch, to Elisabeth McAllister, in Puslinch Township, 03 December 1857. Married by licence. Witnesses were William Clark and Alexander McAllister, both of Puslinch Township. item 5: Marriage certificate issued by Presbyterian minister Alexander MacKay, that Ronald MacPherson and Mary Clark were married at Rev. MacKay's house in Guelph on Wednesday 26 March 1890. item 6: Piece of paper that accompanied items 4 and 5, offering a description of them, written in the hand of Anna Jackson, ca. 1980. file 2: Gilchrist family correspondence and documents, 1854-1916. item 1: Letter [tiny copy and photocopy] from Peter Gilchrist to his sister, dated Mackinac, 10 July 1854. Re. health, "the marriage of Miss Clark and the accident that happened to the Tailor", Mr. McLean's "confounded root house", the author's experience fishing on a sailing sloop called "the Clipper" under Captain Ranald McDonald, and cholera in Chicago. 2 pages each copy. item 2: Certificate, written by Peter Gilchrist, certifying that his daughter Mary C. Gilchrist was born 04 Dec. 1873. Certificate dated Killean, 21 September 1891. 1 page. item 3: Marriage Certificate, Angus McCormick of Puslinch Township to Annie Taylor Gilchrist of Puslinch Township, 20 April 1898. Witnesses were John Y. Robertson and Bessie Gilchrist. Minister was Rev. James S. Scott, Presbyterian minister at Hespeler. 1 page. item 4: Reminiscences of Peter Gilchrist, written ca. 1900. Accompanying note in the hand of the compiler, "Peter Gilchrist, my father's maternal grandfather, writing his memoir for one of his daughters; probably Janet". Gilchrist records that he was born 1828 in Shipness, Kantyre, Argyleshire, Scotland, and emigrated with his family in 1842. He recalls his schooling in Scotland, family, the voyage to Canada and crossing the country to Aberfoyle, and life in Puslinch Township. 8 pages. item 5: North Dumfries and South Waterloo Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. receipt issued to Mr. Peter Gilchrist of Killean, Ontario, 20 October 1900. item 6: [ph 24450] Image of the Gilchrist coat of arms, under which is the text "William Gilchrist", reproduced by photographer David Barber of Hespler ca. 1905. Includes motto, "Spero Bene Agere", and sheild with two crosses, sun and sea shell. Knight's helmet sits atop crest, with setting or rising sun in background. [note: is not accompanied by a scrapbook]. item 8: Letter from Jno. W. Gilchrist to his father Peter Gilchrist, dated St Kitts 23 January [postmarked 1916]. Re. his new job in a munitions factory in St. Catharines, the process of producing shells and bullet parts, and his employers' expectations of their factory workers. 2 pages; double sided. Includes envelope postmarked St. Catharines, Ont., 24 January 1916, addressed to Mr. Peter Gilchrist, R R No 2 , Hespeler". file 3: McCormick family correspondence and documents, 1824-1972. item 1: Letter to Duncan Stewart Esq., of Glenbuckie [Scotland] from Archd. McCormick, John McCormick, and Archd. McCormick Jr., dated Limecraigs, 02 July 1824. Re. reducing arrears, and provision of labour for the Duke of Argyle Estate. Letter begins, "Sir, As you have agreed to reduce the arrears due by us for the Glen farm of Tomaig at the term of Martinmass Eighteen hundred and twenty three and preceedings to the Sum of Fourty four pounds eighteen shillings and six pence sterling, we hereby Bind and oblige ourselves jointly...". 2 joined pages, double sided. item 2: Certificate of birth and of character for William McCormaig [McCormick] and his wife Jean McKay, written by John Campbell (Session Clerk) and signed by Rev. D. Macdonald, and two elders of their church: Donald McLean and Archibald W. Gill, 04 August 1838. Begins, "These do certify that the bearers hereof, William McCormaig with Jean McKay, his lawful spouse, were born and brought up in the parish of Killean, Shire of Argyll, from their infancy...". Birth dates extracted from the Parish of Killean registers are included. 1 page. [document very fragile]. Also includes 1 page description of document by Anna Jackson. item 3: Photocopy of a letter of recommendation dated Greenock, 02 June 1841. Signed by A. Mann[?], Superintendant of Police, it certifies that William McCormick "served under me as a Police Officer for the last three years to my intire satisfaction...". item 4: Letter from Niell McCormick (c/o Alexander McGregor, Tavern Keeper, Yonge Street, Toronto) sent to Donald McTaggart (first Concession Gore of pushlinch No 16 / Wellington District America), dated Toronto, "Jenoury the 20 1843". Letter possibly intended to be forwarded to Scotland by Mr. McTaggart as is addressed "Dear father and mother" and speaks of the sending a letter and newspaper home last month, and says "If I had more time I would let you no more about Cannada". 2 pages; letter extremely fragile with pieces missing at time of accession. item 5: Letter from Arch. McCallum addressed to his brother "William Mac Cormick / Puslinch / Lot 19th First Concession / near Galt / upper Canada / America", and dated Campbeltown [Argyll, Scotland], 3rd March 1843. Letter tells of the economic situation in and around Campbeltown which is forcing many to think of going to America (i.e. Canada), the author's suspicions about the discontentedness of Puslinch Township residents, and of John Clark (who was sitting in same room as author at time of writing) who was having hassles in obtaining rights to land in Puslinch Township due to the unreliability of his brother and of Norman Ramsey who settled around Galt [Norman Ramsay listed in Puslinch Twp. on 1851 Census] 2 pages, double sided. Document is very fragile and has come away at the creases, and portions are missing at time of accession. A note written by the compiler and found with the letter reads, "A delicate leter 1843 from his brother-in-law in scotland McCallum to my paternal great grandfather William in Puslinch, pleading for assistance for John Clark, my maternal great great grand-father who was having difficulty in getting title to his late brother James' land in Puslinch". item 6: Letter from Arch'd McCormick of Campbelton, Argyll, Scotland, to his son William McCormick ("Puslinch / first Concess Lot 16 / District of Gore near / Galt, Canada"), dated Campbeltown, 28 December 1843. Re. frustrations with the postal service, not being able to come to Canada due to Mrs. McCormick's poor health and lack of funds (even though their chests are all packed and ready to go), remembrances sent to friends and family in Ontario, especially Donald McTaggart, and information about people in Scotland. 2 pages, double sided; extremely fragile, with pieces missing at time of accession. item 7: Letter from Archibald McCormick of Campbelton, Argyll, Scotland, addressed to his son William McCormick, Township of Puslinch, Lot 15 First Concession / Destrict of gore Near Galt / Upper Canada / N. America", postmarked Campbelton 09 May 1845, and Guelph July 1845. Re. Mrs. McCormick (William's mother) doing very poorly due to lack of breath and depression since her family went to Canada, the author's disappointment at not being told by William of Niel's death (of which he was informed by Donald McTaggart), widespread fever that had affected most of the family and had killed Alexander McCallum in Witchburn, the author's attempt to get to Canada which was thrwarted on the day he was to leave when his money was "stoped", the author requesting money from friends and family in order that he can emigrate, information re. the McTaggart family, and Genat [Janet?] McQuilkan. It is concluded, "I hop[e] on god this is the last letter all [sic] send to you from Scotland. I am your loving father till Death, Archd McCormick". 2 pages, double sided. item 8: Letter from Malcolm McCormick to his sister Mary McNaughton, dated 157 Alfred Street, Kingston, Ontario, 04 August 1900. Re. thanking his sister for money received for the coming year at college [Queen's University?], the quantity and expense of the books he's required to buy, his goal to become a teacher, his housemates, his board with a Nova Scotian who also speaks Gaelic, description of and report of the death of a favourite professor [brother of Sir Oliver Mowat], professors' tendencies to "crack jokes" in class, description of Professor McNaughton, improvements to dormitories, questions about the Canadian West, and requesting a further $50. 1 page, double sided; has been nibbled by mice along crease. Is accompanied by note in hand of the compiler, "Letter 1900 from Great Uncle Malcolm McCormick my grandfather's brother to his sister Mary (McCormick) McNaughton". item 9: Collegiate Institutes, High Schools and Continuation Schools of Ontario certificate that Bessie McCormack has passed the Junior Entrance Examination required for admission to a Collegiate Institute, High School or Continuation School, dated Fergus, 15 July 1915. item 10: Letter to Donald McCormick Esq., R.R. No.2, Puslinch, Co. Wellington, Ont. from Mary [Mrs. James McNaughton?], dated Edmonton [Alberta], 22 June 1921. Re. her father William McCormick's birth details, and birth and death dates related to other family members in Scotland, and in Puslinch at Killean and Crieff. She says, "I got this information from Father himself". 3 pages double sided, with envelope. On back of envelope are the names Mrs. James McNaughton of Edmonton, Alberta [and envelope is postmarked Edmonton], Mrs. Joseph Coulter of Calgary, Ralph Robert Nelson, Cecil James Nelson, Clarabele Nelson, Wesley Coulter, Kenneth Coulter, Hubert Coulter, Beatrice Coulter, and Malcolm Coulter. item 11: Letter from Wm. A. McCormick of Puslinch Township to "Dearest friend Margaret" [McPherson?], dated 01 January 1930 (written with the fountain pen she gave him for Christmas). Re. his wonderful new pen, New Year's resolutions, milder weather, poor motoring conditions in Morriston, dances at Aberfoyle, Jean Heller's marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Witter's new baby, and Mrs. McAllister's fortune. Also references to Charlie Gregor, Bill Lennon, Malcolm McMillan, Jim McGeachy, and others. 3 pages. item 12: Certificate of marriage, William Alexander McCormick to Margaret Cathearine McPherson, at the bride's home in Puslinch Township, 08 June 1932. Solomnized by Rev. Peter Mathieson of Morriston. Witnesses were James A. McPherson and Bessie McCormick. 1 page. item 13: Marriage certificate and ceremony [programme] for the wedding of William Alexander McCormick and Margaret Catherine McPherson, both of Puslinch Township, 08 June 1932. Re. birthday wishes "for my dear little granddaughter". Accompanying letter is Certificate of Registration of Birth for Anna Elizabeth McCormick, born to William A. McCormick and Margaret C. McPherson. 2 pages. item 16: List of autographs provided on the occasion of the 40th wedding anniversary celebration for Margaret [McPherson] and William [McCormick] which took place on 10 June 1972. Also found within was a wedding invitation for the wedding of Mary Christa Gilchrist to Dr. John McKenzie, 29 June 1910 at Killean, Puslinch Township; and a card presented to David J. Gilchrist on 06 July 1900, from R.G. Struthers, for reciting at least 20 bible selections for the Killean Bible School. Re. the cuteness of little Andrew, Davina and mother's lonliness, the McCormick family, Charlie Blair, Willie McCormick's birthday, pneumonia, John McKenzie's preaching for the Y.M.C.A. where they got him "to preach a treatise on 'Hell' which he has, and which has made him more or less famous...", Elkins not as nice as Brantford, and the dangers of cooking/heating with gas. Includes a card advertising the talk "Is There a Hell?" by Rev. John McKenzie of David-Elkins College, 19 March [1911], men only. Re. little Margaret crawling around with her milk bottle and eating soft boiled eggs, child development, whooping cough, college work, arrival of spring, sinking of the Titanic, floods in Ontario, and Maggie enjoying life in The Royal City [Guelph]. 3 pages, double sided; plus envelope. item 7: Letter addressed to "Dear Mother" from Mary, dated D.E. College, Elkins, W. Va, 14 April [no year given; ca. 1912]. Re. would appreciate more correspondence, little Margaret sitting on the author's knee, local dressmaker, child's birthday party, and fire at the saw mill in Elkins. 2 pages, double sided. Fletcher and A.E. Mellish. Inside journal have been written mathematical calculations and notes about crops and livestock dated 1920-1923. Eg., notation from April 18 reads, "Bought 3 bu wheat 7.44 / from D McCormick"; and dated 31 May 1928, "White cow calved / spotted bull". item 3: Education Department of Ontario, High School Entrance examination questions, 1908. Covers subjects of reading, English Grammar, composition, geography, writing, and arithmetic. Written on back of latter, "Peters Entrance / exam papers / Jan 9 / 78 / M.
