Documents from the Estate of Lena and husband Arthur Nesbitt of Peel Township near Alma, 1887-1987. William Arthur Nesbit (1884-1975) was the son of Thomas Nesbitt (1850-1890) and Margaret Groves of Peel Township. Lena Eleanor Nesbitt (1887-1988) was the daughter of William Barnet and Mary Jane Mills, and grew up on their farm on the west part of Concession 3, Lot 16 in West Garafraxa Township. She taught school at Living Springs, and later at the Duke of Connaught School in Toronto, before her marriage to Arthur Nesbitt in Toronto on 23 November 1921. One of their children was Jean Nesbitt who married Mr. Ruppel. Series 1: Thomas Nesbitt notebook, ca. 1887-1890. [LOCATED MU 660] file 1: Farm notebook, ca. 1887-1890. item 1: Notebook of Thomas Nesbitt, farmer of the west half of Lot 20, Concession 16, Peel Township near Alma, including entries with dates 1887-1890 [note: Thomas Nesbitt died due to a farming accident in 1890]. Identified on second page as "Thomas Nesbitt Note Book Peel" and "County Wellington / Alma post / township peel / Thomas Nesbitt". Includes mathematical calculations, lists of supplies needed or purchased with the price (eg. "cotton shirting 9 yds"), and several references to pigs who "went away". For example one page includes the entries: "1887 dec 9 sow went away... 1888 Jess went may 10th / kate went away June 28... 1890 april 2 little black pigs went away / 1890 may 19 big pig went away...". Beginning of notebook includes a draft of a letter requesting the terms "for a boy about fourteen or fifteen". Later in the book is the notation, "directions / Alfred B Owen Agent / Dr Barnardoo [sic] home / 204 farley avenue / Toronto". [note: on page 525 of the Portraits of Peel history book, Thomas Nesbitt's grand- daughter Ruth Nesbitt writes that her father [Arthur], "remembered that a Barnardo boy slept in the small upstairs bedroom...". Also written in the book is a contract, "We the undersigned agree to pay the Sum opposite our respective names for paying the Salary of the Rev. Thos Smith yearly...", signed Anthony Griffin, John Binns, and Thomas Nesbitt. 8.3 x 13.4 x 1.3 cm; hard bound in maroon -coloured cover with elastic strap [that at time of accession has lost all elasticity]. Series 2: Arthur Nesbitt and Lena Nesbitt (nee Barnet) documents, 1919-1987. [LOCATED MU 660] file 1: Receipt, certificates, correspondence, poems, 1919-1987. item 1: Receipt to Mr. A Nesbitt from Alex. Burnett of Alma, Ontario, dated 11 September 1919. For vinaiger, tea, raisins and tobacco purchased. item 2: Certificate presented to Miss Lena E. Barnet, certifying life membership in the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Signed by Jessie Wilson (Secretary), Janet T. MacGillivray (President), and Lillian Ew Jones (Treasurer) and dated Toronto, 24 October 1921. Mounted on cardboard backing. item 3: Letter to Miss Lena Barnet from staff of Duke of Connaught School in Toronto, wishing her well as she leaves the staff, dated 29 April 1921. One page, signed by staff members; includes envelope addressed to "Miss Barnet". item 4: Letter addressed to Mr and Mrs. Nesbitt from L.J.R. Naftel, Rector of Holy Trinity Church in Alma, expressing the church's heartiest welcome to the couple, and good wishes for their success and happiness, dated 30 January 1922. Includes envelope addressed to "Mr & Mrs Arthur Nesbitt". item 5: Certificate of Lena Eleanor Nesbitt's Confirmation into the Anglican faith, which was performed by Bishop William of Niagara at Holy Trinity Church in Alma on 04 June 1922. It also records her first communion as taking place on 11 June 1922. Signed by Church Rector Lionel J.R. Naftel. On reverse is a listing of "Rules to help one who has been Confirmed". item 6: Two pages of poems concerning a wife's role and expectations, handwritten ca. 1922. One entitled "A Woman's Question" is at the bottom of the page attributed to E. B. Browning, but was written by poet Mary T. "Lena" Lathrap. The other poem is entitled "A Woman's Reason" [author unknown]. Includes envelope marked "Poems" [which has in parts been nibbled by mice]. item 7: Card of congratulations sent to Lena Nesbitt from Perrin Beatty, Member of Parliament for the riding of Wellington-Dufferin-Simcoe, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, signed and dated 13 July 1987. Includes images of maple leaves, the National Parliament buildings, and the crests of Canada and its provinces. item 8: Card of congratulations sent to Lena Nesbitt from Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada, on the occasion of her hundredth birthday, signed and dated Ottawa, 1987. Includes image of the crest of Canada and an embossed gold seal. item 9: Letter of congratulations sent to Lena Nesbitt from Jeanne Sauve, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, signed and dated Rideau Hall, Ottawa, 13 July 1987. Includes symbol of crowned lion holding a maple leaf in one paw. Includes details re. the funeral and image of landscape with ivy-filled urn and a wreath. item 2: Last Will and Testament of Kate Bright, widowed housekeeper of Wiarton, Ontario, dated 31 October 1939. Her executors were William Arthur Nesbitt and Lena Nesbitt of R.R.#1 Arthur, Ontario. She left property to her stepson Dr. Robert J.R. Bright of Winnipeg, Edna Morgan (daughter of F. Joseph Bright of Mount Forest), her niece Laura K. Hiltz of Toronto, her nephew William Arthur Nesbitt of Arthur, Ontario, her niece Elizabeth Campbell of Brandon, her niece Mary Fiddes, her niece Isabella Akitt of Saskatoon, her brother Gibson Groves of Parry Sound, her grand-nephew Austin Hiltz of Brantford, her niece Mary Ferguson of Toronto, her niece Laura Kennedy of Lachine, Quebec, her grand-nephew Dr. Sutherland Groves, her nieces Margaret and Kethleen Hiltz of Fergus, Rev. C. J. Draper of Wiarton, her niece Helen Groves of Toronto, Day Star Mission in Punichy, Saskatchewan, as well as leaving money to churches for missionary projects. 6 pages. Signed by John Douglas Wilson of Fergus, Notary Public of Ontario. item 3: Last Will and Testament of James Nesbitt, retired farmer of Nichol Township, who died in Fergus 02 April 1942. Will was written at Elora on 20 June 1939. Executors were Thomas Nesbitt of Nichol Township and Arthur Nesbitt of Peel Township. He left his estate to his nephews John M. Nesbitt, Harry Cross, Joseph Jackson, Thomas Nesbitt, Wilfred Nesbitt, Arthur Nesbitt, Harry Nesbitt and William Nesbitt, to his nieces Mary Ferguson, Laura Kennedy, Edith Wilson, Laura Nesbitt, Clara Singer, and Eva McDonald, and to his sister-in-law Florence V. Nesbitt. He also left money to the Women's Auxiliary of the Holy trinity Anglican Church at Alma. 4 pages. Series 5: Photographs, ca. 1915-1917. On the front of this card is the'spreading chesnut tree' that Tennyson wrote about...We are still in quarantine but have a very good camp as we have a find ymca". Mentions Oliver and Laura.
