Archie and Jean Beattie records, 1901-2004. Photographs, deeds, programmes and other records, most of which were in the possession of Jean Beattie (nee Gammie, 1914-1998) when she passed away on 02 May 1998. Her husband, Archie W. Beattie (1909-1994) was born in Nichol Township to W.R. Beattie and Edith Hastings on 11 May 1909. He grew up on the family farm, and like other members of the Beattie family, had a keen interest in music. As a youth he gained a reputation as a violinist, and joined family and friends as a performer with the Beattie Orchestra. In 1940 he married Jean, who was the daughter of Jack Gammie and Ida Pritchard. They continued on the Beattie family farm until 1967, when they severed a half-acre lot, building a new house for themselves on the severance. In 1989 they retired to Fergus. Archie W. Beattie held a long interest in municipal affairs. He became a Nichol Township councillor in 1941, and Reeve of the Township in 1945. In 1950 he served as Warden for the County of Wellington. He represented Nichol Township as a member of the Grand River Conservation Authority from 1951-1977, and continued his involvement with the GRCA after that date on boards and committees devoted to reforestation, the Luther Marsh, land use, and park development. He was a member of the Wellington Board of Health for thirty-six years, twenty-five of which he served as its chairman. In this capacity, he presided over its amalgamation with heath units from Dufferin County and from Guelph. He retired from all of these pursuits in 1983, and passed away in Fergus on 16 October 1994.
