John Chapman, accounts / Reby Chapman, postcards, Fergus, 1904-1914. John Chapman (1868-1944) operating as J.C. Chapman, ran a farm implement store in Fergus from 1904 into the 1920s. He advertised Buggies; Carriages; Wagons; Cutters; Sleighs; Plough Repairs, etc. / Threshing Machines; Engines; Oils; Gasoline; Binder Twine, etc. Upon the arrival of automobiles, he sold and serviced them as well. A promotional article in a 1916 Fergus News-Record, reported he was "a dealer in high-class farm machinery, an agent for Frost & Wood, Cockshut, Waterloo threshers, Lister gasoline engines, DeLaval separators, Singer Sewing Machines, McLaughlin Carriages, Automobiles, etc. ... Mr. J.C. Chapman, the proprietor, is well-known as an enterprising and popular citizen of Fergus." Mr. Chapman kept account ledgers, detailed, neat and legible. - file 1: Accounts, 1904-1908. [MU 1316] Includes separate alphabetic index of names. Entries, mainly for wood and coal, begin John Alpaugh Sr., 1904 (p.3) and end Mrs. Raymond, 1905 (p.153). Twine Account 1906 (p.169, 171); 1907 (p.173-175); 1908 (p.177, 179). Additional accounts (p.201-214) for buggies, plows, washers and wringers 1904-1905. Pages 579-585 list "Repairs" 1906-1907. - file 2: Accounts, 1906-1915; at back: car sales 1919-1921. [MU 1316] Includes separate alphabetic index of names. Inside front cover: "Reby Chapman / Sept. 13 / 14." Entries begin David Allan, 1911 [crossed out](p.5); Jas. E. Armstrong, 1906 [crossed out] (p.6); and Wm. Cooper, 1907 (p.9) and end J.E. Brown, 1914 (p.287); there are some entries for 1915. In addition, "Record of Car Sales, 1919 (p.289) - 1921 (p.295). Items found loose include invoices on J.C. Chapman letterhead; order forms and delivery tags from Chevrolet Motor Co., 1919, 1920. - file 3: Accounts, 1914-1919. [MU 1316] Begins Pat Burns, 1915 (p.2) and ends John Black, Toronto, 1919 (p.405). Items listed include gasoline, paints, twine, repairs, plowshares, cultivators, ranges, sewing machines, tires and batteries. John Chapman and his wife Elizabeth (nee Davison, 1872-1955) had one daughter, Reby Mae Chapman (1895-1971). Her birth was registered in West Garafraxa Township, and she moved with her parents to Fergus and eventually to 445 St. Andrew Street West. Miss Chapman became a milliner in the department store of C.S. Ewing. She continued to live in this house after her parents' death and when she moved to an apartment, the house was sold to Dr. Rudy Chiarandini. In the attic were found the ledgers (above) and the postcard album (below). Postcard album. [MU 1316] - file 6: Found within: - Item 1: 3-page letter to Miss Reby Chapman, Fergus, Ont. from her uncle, Charles A. Chapman, The Cronin Ranch, 3 August 1913. The printed place name "Glentanna" B.C. has been crossed out and replaced with handwritten "Talkwa" [Telkwa]. - ph 47319: Oval portrait, mounted on card, of two young girls, seated, both dressed in white, each wearing a locket, one holding a flower. The portrait is signed in pencil "Banks." [Reby's Auntie Nell lived at Prince Albert. A photographer, James Banks is listed for that town in 1913]. The 32 postcards , dated 1902-1914 are to and from members of the family and friends, including several girls and one boy. There is occasional mention of Fritz, the dog. Postcards are addressed to Fergus, Ontario, unless otherwise noted. They are all stored in page-number order, with the photo collection between ph 47320 and ph 47350. The numbers in square brackets indicate the page and position of each card, as found. Only the Wellington County images have been given ph numbers scanned and linked. - ph 37320: [2-1] Sepia.
