Sgt. Thompson Rennie of Elora (1921-1943), photographs and newspaper clippings, ca. 1930-1949. Thompson "Tommy" Rennie was born in Elora or Peel Township, Ontario, on 01 September 1921 to Henry Rennie (1888-1936) and Clara Alberta Rennie (nee Thompson, 1883-1959). He grew up in Elora and attended school there. During these years, he played in the Boys' and Girls' Band, and was popular amongst his peers. Rennie graduated from the Elora High School around 1939, the year that the Second World War broke out. Rennie enlisted in the Canadian military in November of 1940, and was sent to train in Brandon, Manitoba, and in Alberta in High River and Calgary. After ten months' training in Canada, he was deployed overseas where his training continued in England. During the war, Rennie served as a wireless air gunner with the Royal Canadian Air Force. At the age of twenty-two, while in North Africa working with an American squadron, Rennie and his flight crew were killed in action on 22 March 1943. At the time of his death, he had attained the rank of Pilot Officer. He is buried at Fort Scott National Cemetery in Kansas, USA, and is listed on the Elora cenotaph, and on his parents' tombstone in the Elora Cemetery. He was posthumously awarded the United States Distinguished Flying Cross (1945) and Royal Canadian Air Force Operational Wings (1947).
