Description |
Kells family records, 1907-1970. Clifton Kells (1908-1987) was the son of Peel Township farmers David Elwood Kells (1879-1931) and Margaret Louisa Shieck (1879-1960). He grew up in Peel Township and married schoolteacher, Hazel Main (1912-1988). Kells served as Reeve of Peel Township, and in 1963, as Warden of the County of Wellington. Together Clifton and Hazel raised four children, Earle, Lois, Muriel, and Jean. All items stored [ MU 1384 ] unless otherwise noted. SERIES 1: Clifton Kells, 1909-1963. - item 1: Baptismal certificate of Clifton Kells, born 08 May 1908, baptized 14 January 1909 by Joseph L. Arches[?]; one sheet, handwritten with water damage in centre and lower left corner missing. - item 2: Ontario Department of Education certificate issued to Clinton Kells [sic], for having complied with the requirements for admission to high school, dated at Fergus, 15 July 1922; one sheet. - item 3: Application for rural electrical service and energy, in which Clifton Kells of 100 acres at Lot 13, Concession 14, Peel Township, requests electricity to be brought to his farm, dated 08 January 1946, and accepted and executed by the Corporation of the Township of Peel on 08 August 1947; rates and conditions printed on reverse; one sheet. - item 4: Menu and programme of the County of Wellington's Warden's Banquet held at the Royal Hotel in Guelph on 05 December 1963, to honour Warden Clifton Kells, Reeve of Peel Township. The menu includes fresh and preserved vegetables, turkey and cooked vegetables, with Christmas pudding and apple pie with cheese for dessert. The festivities included "old tyme and modern dancing." List of reeves on reverse. SERIES 2: Hazel Main, 1919-1937. - item 1: Baptismal certificate, 12 December 1919; for Hazel Beatrice Main, born 24 September 1912 in Nichol Township to James B. Main and Ada May Main; signed by Rev. H. J. Harnworth[?]. - item 2: Certificate of honour issued to Hazel Main by S. S. No. 4 Pilkington Township, at the Nichol and Pilkington Rural School Fair held at S.S. No. 3 Nichol Township, 11 Setpember 1924. - item 3: Certificate issued to Hazel Main by the Ontario Department of Education for having complied with the requirements for admission to a high school, 02 July 1925; signed by J.H. Craig and J.M. Roszel. - items 4 - 5: Lower School examination certificates issued by the Ontario Department of Education to Hazel Main at Elora, 1926-1927. - items 6 - 7: Middle School examination certificates issued by the Ontario Department of Education to Hazel Main at Elora, 1928-1929. - item 8: Elora High School graduation diploma issued to Hazel Main, dated Elora, 23 November 1929; signatures include that of principal, A. Gilmour, and School Board chairman, J. M. Wilson. - item 9: Autograph book given to Hazel Main as a gift in December 1931 from "Violet;" it includes poems and autographs dated between 1931-1935. Many of the signatures appear to be from fellow students at the Hamilton Normal School. Signed by John Broughton and Martha Brougthon [sic] in the presence of Ezra Smith. - item 2: Abstract of title produced by the Registry Office of the north riding, County of Wellington, 10 April 1907; re. the north half of the east half of Lot 13, Concession 13, Peel Township, listing mortgages paid off by John Broughton between 1901-1907. - item 3: Mimeographed copy of the last will and testament of Richard Johnston, farmer of Peel Township who died 25 June 1914. The will was originally written in February 1912. In it, Johnston names as his executors his sons Richard Leslie Johnston and Robert Francis Johnson, both farmers of Peel Township. He left his household goods and all chattles to his wife, Elizabeth Jane Johnston, along with provision for an annuity. He left all of his real estate to his son Robert F. Johnston, including the north half of the east half of Lot 13, Concession 13, Peel Township. He left provision that after his his wife's death, payments be made to his children William Edwin Johnston and Annie Louisa Aumann, as well as to his grandchild, Annie Alma Grace Boyle; one sheet, prepared by lawyer, Henry Wissler of Elora. SERIES 5: Miscellaneous, 1909-1970. - item 1: Book titled "The Household Companion, comprising a complete cook book, practical household recipes, aids and hints for household decorations; the care of domestic plants and animals and a treatist on domestic medicine," by N. L. Dewsnap, published by The John C. Winston Company Limited of Toronto, 1909; the book is divided into five sections, the first of which is called a cookbook and consists of recipes for food and drink, but also includes recipes for cleaning, laundry and household pests; the second part is titled "home decorations" and provides instructions for making rugs, furntiure, draperies, mirrors, pillows, window gardens, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, potpourri, wax flowers, flower and fruit molds, as well as information about decorating rooms, decorations for weddings and other occasions, and decalcomanie [collage on objects]; the third part titled "practical mechanics" gives instruction on home repair, carpentry, bricklaying, engineering, aesthetics, excavation, metal work, varnishes and how to make them, polishes, wall papering, shingles, stone work, plastering, as well as information about tools, hiring tradesmen, installing electric bells and telephones, animals, steam heating, thawing frozen pipes, weights and measures, and calculating measurement; the fourt part offers instruction relating to social etiquette in various situations; the fifth part relates to disease, medicine, nursing, care of children, hygiene, nutrition, and homeopathy, with a large section devoted to tuberculosis. Hardcover, illustrated with photographs of food, interiors, and excercises, 370 pages. [ STACKS ] - item 3 / MAP 3062: Printed plan titled "Insurance Survey of John C. Mundell & Co. L'T'D, Elora, Ont[ario]," April 1943; brown ink on paper; it is a fire insurance plan that details a portion of the Village of Elora, with specifics as to the purpose of each building depicted, especially those belonging to furniture manufacturers, John C. Mundell and Company Limited. Plan includes the Elora Mill, dwellings, offices, and commercial buildings on Mill Street, The complex of Mundell buildings on the north side of Mill Street West, including the old Commercial Hotel building which is described as a warehouse for paper cartons, buildings abutting the Grand River on the southeast side of the Victoria Street Bridge, and Mundell's complex of buildings between Allan Street, County Road 7, and the Grand River. It shows the river with mill dam and the Victoria Street bridge, as well as buildings abutting the lower portion of "Pringle St" [sic, Price Street], Mill Street West, Allan Street and the northern portion of Victoria Street. Inscribed on the plan in blue ink at a later date [ca. 1950] are notations about a building being constructed, and drawing of the footprint of a new factory building to be built over Allan Street [thereby closing that portion of road] and an existing lumber yard. Also drawn onto the plan is the Guelph Road [aka Wellington County Road 7] and notes about buildings shown on the 1943 plan which were slated for removal. Several of the buildings shown on this plan were later heavily damaged by fire in 1954. [ MC 84 ] - item 4: Programme of service to be held on 25 June 1950 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the opening of the church building of the Alma United Church, produced by the United Church of Canada, 1950. Participants included Rev. H.H. Cragg (minister), Rev. Harold W. Avison of Galt (guest preacher), Mrs. Ralph Deagle (organist), and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bruin of Lion's Head (assisting the choir). - item 5: Booklet titled "Pocket Guide to First Aid," sixth edition, published by St. John Ambulance / The Priory of Canada of the Order of St. John, 1958; it offers instruction relating to medical assistance to provide in case of emergency; illustrated, softcover, the 64-page booklet has been published in both English and French, with each section 32 pages in length. - item 6: Mennonite Aid ordinance itemizing the insurance value of the farm of David W. Weber of R.R.1 Alma, 05 May 1970. It lists the owner of the property as David W. Weber and the director to whom he should make any claims as Ephraim S. Weber. Lot and Concession number left blank. The breakdown provides valuations on the dwelling house, its contents, the barn and silo, implement sheds, farm implements, and livestock and produce; top have of sheet explains coverage and terms; one sheet. |
