Notes on the Harper family, 1839-1974: The biography of Richard Harper [Sr], in the 1906 Atlas of Wellington County, reports that he came from England in 1849, settled in Port Hope, and later farmed with his wife Jane Oliver (nee Lemin) at Concession 16, Lot 10, Pilkington Township - see below. Their large family included sons Richard [Jr] and his wife Mary (nee Amy) in Oakville - see below; and Aaron and Mary (nee Oakman) in Pilkington - see below. The 1871 Census of Canada shows Richard Harper [Jr], a blacksmith, and his wife Mary, both 32 years old, born in England, then living in Oakville, Halton County. With them are their children: Sarah Jane, born 1865; Thomas Amy, born 1867; John Wesley, born 1869; and Mary Rebecca (born 1870). An addition, Lily Josephine Harper was born to them in June 1872, but Mary Harper died several days later. Lily Josephine Harper seems to have disappeared from the historical record, as has her father Richard Harper. The family dispersed, as the children went to the homes of relations and friends. In the 1881 census, Sara Jane Harper is listed as a maid in the household of Robert and Rebecca Jackson, Peel Township. She does not appear in the Census of 1891 and 1901. In 1902 she married Henry Jackson and they settled near Glenallan. It is from there she wrote her brother ca.1906. The 1911 census shows John C. Harper, a nephew [son of Thomas A.], in the Jackson household. The 1881 Census showed John Wesley Harper with the family of Richard and Jane Oliver Harper [his grandparents] in Pilkington. He does not appear in the census of 1891 or 1901. When he wrote to Thomas in 1905, he was in Illinois. Mary Rebecca Harper appeared in the 1881 census with the family of Richard and Sarah Amy, relations of her mother in Pilkington Township. In 1890, she married Thomas Martindale Bee. The 1906 Census showed Thomas and Mary with 4 children at Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, where she wrote to Thomas about that time. Thomas Amy Harper was 14 in 1881, listed with the family of Aaron and Mary Harper [his uncle and aunt], in Pilkington. In 1890, he married Emma Wright, the daughter of George and Christian Wright of Pilkington. The following year, Thomas and Emma were farming in Woolwich, with a year-old son, George Wright (born 1890) The 1901 census listed the family in Peel Township, with the addition of William Wesley (born 1892); Russel Albert (born 1896 - died young, 1900). John Christian Harper was born in 1900; Thomas reported the birth, listing the mother as Jane Miller. The 1901 assessment roll for Peel Township lists him as proprietor of the flax mill in Alma. Thomas and his family were at Part Lot 6, Concession 15 and 16, Nichol Twp. in 1904. His wife Emma died in 1905. It was her sister Mary (nee Wright) and her husband Joseph Broughton who wrote from Livingstone Creek / Thessalon in 1904 and 1905. Thomas died in 1943. His son William continued on the farm until the 1960s. He died in 1974. William never married, perhaps aware of the deaths at a very young age of both his mother and grandmother. |
